Proud Breeders of Canada's National Horse. We are located in the heart of Central Alberta, surrounded by rolling hills with fields of cattle and grain. We are a 3rd generation family farm, proud producers of quality grain, beef and Canadian horses. I have been immersed with horses since infancy and feel blessed to be able to share my passion with others. My interest in Canadian Horses developed while searching for the perfect family horse breed. I was drawn to their beauty, quiet nature and versatility but most especially the fact that the breed is unique to Canada. Our first Canadian filly arrived in the year 2000 and I have pursued enlarging our herd by striving to obtain mares with old foundation bloodlines while ensuring that they have the capability to perform at any task or discipline. Our mares range in diversity of colour, size and build with the intent to produce exceptional quality foals.

The goal of Diamond A Canadians is to produce top quality Canadian horses. Diamond A horses are equally at ease from the competitive show ring, cross country courses to pleasure pursuits or even enhancing your own breeding program.  Our farm is geared towards producing the old style, 'traditional' type Canadian Horse.

Our stallion, Delavoye Heros Phenom, is a shadow of the breed standard picture. He is stout, heavily boned, well put together, quick to learn, and has a heart of gold! He is the second last son of Bienvenue Lou Heros and the only son of Heros standing in Western Canada.

Our brood mare band consists of a variety of bloodlines, measure from 14.2 to 15.1 HH with colors including black, brown, and chestnut.

We are located near Rimbey in central Alberta, Canada.

Description

Shabraque is a family run breeding facility dedicated to breeding Canada's National Horse, the Canadian. The Canadian Horse is one of the oldest breeds developed in North American. It was developed from stock sent to the colony in New France in the 1700's by Louis XIII. It incorporated such breeds as Andalusian, Arabs, various other saddle breeds, and heavy drafts. All of which were left together in big herds over the Quebec winters. Eventually the Canadian was developed into a proper breed with a distinct genome. The Canadian is known for its strength, even temperament, and ability to perform whatever task is asked of it; from pulling wagons to show jumping, the Canadian can do it all. As one of the oldest breeds in North American, many other breeds developed here have Canadian roots. Breeds such as the Morgan, Tennessee Walker, American Saddlebred, etc were developed from the Canadian Horse. Unfortunately, such widespread use of the Canadian is what led to its decline. Because of their strength, temperament, and utilitarian nature, many Canadian Horses were used in wars, such as the American Civil War, the Boer War, and WWI. As the animals were often killed or generally abandoned after the wars, the Canadian Horse is now on the endangered list.

Shabraque itself also follows a military history. Owner Steve Critchley served with the Canadian Forces, and upon retirement, sought to honour those who served while renewing Canada's History. The word Shabraque itself is old military parlance meaning "regimental saddle cloth". All foals born at Shabraque are named after fallen Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians).
